![]() ![]() ![]() This book was recommended by Ridley and it more than lived up to its reputation for empathy and charm: Jesse's depiction is thoughtful and rounded and avoids many of the common problems of mental disability in fiction. Unlike Rupert, however, Jesse Best is the hero of his story, with a POV and HEA and everything. Last week Eloisa James broke my heart (and not in the good way) with her depiction of a character with a mental impairment caused by oxygen deprivation at birth: Pamela Morsi's earthy and charming Simple Jess is the perfect book to read as a follow-up, since it features a character with a similar disability and an identical cause. ![]() Themes and connections are coming from the woodwork out, which is incredibly gratifying for someone who thinks of books as part of a grand conversation anyways. One of the great delights as I continue this post series is how intertwined the various books are starting to become. ![]() ![]() ![]() Knowing that she could no longer write any novels, the elderly Christie authorised Curtain's removal from the vault and subsequent publication. ![]() The final Poirot novel that Christie wrote, Elephants Can Remember, was published in 1972, followed by Christie's last novel, Postern of Fate. Partly fearing for her own survival, and partly wanting to have a fitting end to Poirot's series of novels, Christie had the novel locked away in a bank vault for over thirty years. The novel also returns the characters to the setting of Christie's first published work, The Mysterious Affair at Styles.Ĭhristie wrote the novel in the early 1940s, during World War II. The novel features Hercule Poirot and Arthur Hastings (who had not appeared together since Dumb Witness in 1937) in their final appearances in Christie's works. ![]() Curtain: Poirot's Last Case is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club in September 1975 and in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in the same year, probably also in September. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On a deeper level, the story explores the relationship between Gabriel and Gretta. This idea is reinforced by the fact that the party takes place in a warm, safe, and hospitable environment, yet the characters are constantly aware of the cold, harsh reality of the world outside. For example, the snow that falls throughout the story serves as a metaphor for the inevitability of death, reminding the characters that their time is limited and that they are only temporarily sheltered from the cold and darkness of the world outside. Throughout the story, Joyce uses imagery and symbolism to evoke a sense of the transience and fragility of life. The narrative follows Gabriel as he reflects on his life and relationship with Gretta, ultimately leading to a profound realization about the nature of life and death. Set in Dublin, Ireland, the story takes place during a Christmas party attended by Gabriel Conroy and his wife, Gretta. The story explores themes of mortality, love, and identity. “The Dead” is a marvelous short story by James Joyce, a phenomenal Irish writer and poet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I think the optimism Mill felt has not been fully realized. Tech giants, radical political groups (mostly leftists, in my opinion), 'benevolent capitalists', oppressive government, dictators, and supranational institutions like the UN, are all threatening and attacking the rights of individuals to express themselves freely, and to live a life according to their own wishes and desires. Mill's plea for radical individual freedom, especially its use for society as a whole (which usually is neglected) is a healthy antidote in these times where different forms of totalitarianism are spreading across the globe. Personally, I think On Liberty should be obligatory reading for all students all over the world. I am still impressed by the force of Mill's arguments and his ethical exhaltedness. Read On Liberty (1859) and Utilitarianism (1861), both for a second time. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book was also a shortlisted finalist for the Governor General's Award for English-language children's literature at the 2014 Governor General's Awards. A wealthy man wrote Woolf a letter asking how women in England could help prevent war, and Woolf takes a circuitous route to say that the foreign oppression of fascism and the domestic oppression of sexism share more roots than the letter writer understands. Three Guineas is similarly strong, but not as gripping. An essay I know I’ll reread many times in my life. And along the way she plays with expectations for narrators and protagonists, treating herself as both simultaneously. Even when I didn’t agree with Woolf’s conclusions, her arguments were clear and easily traceable. I was unprepared for the style and structure of this essay to be so dazzling. ![]() I knew the basic thesis of this essay (that people need private space and personal money to be able to write fiction, and the lack of those two things has historically hindered women writers). ![]() 5 stars for A Room of One’s Own (aka “I Use the English Language Better Than All of You, Deal With It”). ![]() |
